Is there a song you can’t stop listening to? Or do you cry when that one lyric that speaks to you? Does your body feel free when listening to your favorite song? That is our mind and bodies reacting to music. Now, our brains can do a lot of things. The ability to memorize, to constantly learn and grow, to help our bodies do many things. Our brains react differently under different circumstances.
Music is a universal language, it allows us to feel, to move and to be moved. If a song portrays a certain emotion, we are able to feel that specific emotion. Even playing an instrument can expand our minds and help with memory. Music is very therapeutic, it heals without us really thinking about it, that’s beauty of it.
Music is constantly evolving. In more recent years, Music Therapy has become more popular under Alternative Medicine, more common with those who are under the Autism spectrum. Since Music Therapy works very closely with the mind, some parents prefer this form of therapy as it is less binding and more free for younger children with ASD. It can help from things like cognitive behaviors, fine motor skills, social skills and even speech.
The Autism spectrum is very broad, every symptom is different per child. Some children can speak without being prompted, or able to write without issues. Other symptoms in children are more severe, some have little to no speech, others have low motor skills and need to be assisted more frequently than others. Every Autistic has their strengths and that’s what a lot people forget, they’re not broken, our brains just work differently.
My brother is Autistic and has been seeing a Music Therapist for five years. And in these five years, I’ve seen his speech, focus and memory improve. Music Therapy works differently on each child, whether they are on the spectrum or if they are neurotypical.
Not only does Music Therapy help with some symptoms with Autism, but it helps with other mental and physical symptoms. It is known to help with symptoms of depression of anxiety, improving ones mood, physical pains and physical health, pregnancy in women and heart health.
Music is a universal language, it speaks to the human body and mind in many ways; and I’m sure there are more ways that haven’t been discovered yet. There’s a reason why people are drawn to music, it is a healer.
